Ben Abdallah, L.; El Abed., A.; Zarrad., R.; Missaoui., H.; Gharbi., H..

Bottom trawling contribution to the spatio-temporal variability of sediment fluxes on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay (France) ArchiMer
Mengual, Baptiste; Le Hir, Pierre; Cayocca, Florence; Garlan, T..
Based on experiments, a trawling-induced erosion dynamics was included in a 3D realistic and pre-validated hydro-sedimentary model so as to assess its contribution to the overall regional sediment dynamics in the specific case of the Bay of Biscay continental shelf. The effect of trawling was investigated throughout a 5-year period in terms of horizontal/vertical fluxes and changes in seabed mud content, and compared to the natural variability of sediment fluxes at different spatio-temporal scales. Trawling is shown in the model to significantly contribute to sediment re-suspension, and changes in the seabed at the scale of the shelf. The contribution of trawling to re-suspension is >80% during the high fishing season at many locations on the outer...

FEEDING HABITS OF Paralonchurus brasiliensis (PERCIFORMES: SCIAENIDAE) FROM SOUTH OF BRAZIL Acta biol.Colomb.
SEDREZ,Mário Cesar; BARRILLI,Germano Henrique Costa; FRAGOSO-MOURA,Evelise Nunes; BARREIROS,João Pedro; BRANCO,Joaquim Olinto; VERANI,José Roberto.
ABSTRACT Shrimp trawling directly impacts target species and non-target species, altering micro-habitats and marine trophic webs. Thus, the objective of the present research was to analyze the feeding habits of Paralonchurus brasiliensis as a tool to evaluate the impact of trawling on the food chains in marine environments, in the South Atlantic of Brazil. One thousand and nineteen stomachs of P. brasiliensis were dissected after being captured as bycatch of shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, in Penha, on the north central coast of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The number of stomachs was enough to describe the feeding habits of P. brasiliensis, characterizing it as a carnivorous species and predominantly invertivorous. They also revealed that this species has a...

Influence of bottom trawling on sediment resuspension in the 'Grande-Vasière' area (Bay of Biscay, France) ArchiMer
Mengual, Baptiste; Cayocca, Florence; Le Hir, Pierre; Draye, Robin; Laffargue, Pascal; Vincent, Benoit; Garlan, Thierry.
Sea trials were performed on two zones with different fishing efforts on the continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay ('Grande-VasiSre' area of muddy sand) in order to assess particulate matter resuspension and seabed disturbances (i.e., penetration, reworking, grain size changes) induced by different types of trawls. Optical and acoustic measurements made in the water column indicate a significant trawling-induced resuspension mainly due to the scraping action of doors. It manifests as a highly dynamic turbid plume confined near the seabed, where suspended sediment concentrations can reach 200 mg l(-1). Concentration levels measured behind an "alternative" configuration (trawls with jumper doors instead of classical doors penetrating the sediment) are...

Numerical modeling of bottom trawling-induced sediment transport and accumulation in La Fonera submarine canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Payo-payo, Marta; Silva Jacinto, Ricardo; Lastras, G.; Rabineau, Marina; Puig, P.; Martin, J.; Canals, M.; Sultan, Nabil.
Bottom trawling leads to recurrent sediment resuspension events over fishing grounds. Recent studies have shown how bottom trawling can drive seascape reshaping at large spatial scales and enhance sediment transport in submarine canyons, which subsequently impacts deep-sea ecosystems. Present knowledge on the transfer and accumulation of sediment flows triggered by bottom trawling is based on localized and infrequent measurements whilst a more complete picture of the process is needed. The present work focuses on the modeling of sediment transport and accumulation resulting from trawling activities in La Fonera submarine canyon, northwestern Mediterranean Sea, thus contributing to an improved assessment of trawling impacts. Based on mooring data within a...

Observaciones sobre el comportamiento de la merluza (Merluccius hubbsi) durante la pesca de arrastre OceanDocs
Casarsa, L.; Madirolas, A..
The normal behavioral patterns of several fish species is altered during trawling affecting the fish spatial distribution. Sonar methods were carried out in this research work in order to study the reaction of reproductive concentrations of the Argentine hake (Merluccius hubbsi) during mid-water and bottom fishing trawls. Observations made from a trawl sonar mounted on the headrope of an ENGEL (35 m) bottom trawl, showed that this species concentrates at the lower-central sector of the net mouth. During daytime trawls fish schools with a vertical distribution exceeding ten meters were observed entering the trawl within the first two meters from the bottom. Some observations during pelagic trawls carried out at night, showed no specific pattern at the net...

Pesquerías de pulpos OceanDocs
Re, M.E..
The species composition, population structure, seasonality in catches and fishing of octopuses along the Argentine coast are described from available statistical data and capture samplings. Three species of octopuses, Octopus tehuelchus, Eledone massyae and Enteroctopus megalocyathus are caught. An artisanal intertidal fishery of O.tehuelchus occurs mainly in summer, from November-December to March-April in the North Patagonian coast, especially in the San Matias Gulf, by hooks. E.massyae is caught by coastal trawlers all around the year but mainly in winter and spring in Mar del Plata and Necochea areas. E.megalocyathus is caught by hooks in the intertidal zone and by diving in the subtidal zone, from the North Patagonian gulfs (March to November)to the...

Spatio-temporal trends in diversity of demersal fish assemblages in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Farriols, M. Teresa; Ordines, Francesc; Carbonara, Pierluigi; Casciaro, Loredana; Di Lorenzo, Manfredi; Esteban, Antonio; Follesa, Cristina; García-ruiz, Cristina; Isajlovic, Igor; Jadaud, Angelique; Ligas, Alessandro; Manfredi, Chiara; Marceta, Bojan; Peristeraki, Panagiota; Vrgoc, Nedo; Massutí, Enric.
The high species richness, coupled with high proportion of endemism, makes the Mediterranean one of the world’s ‘biodiversity hotspots’. However, the continuous increase in fisheries in the last few decades has led to the overexploitation of their main commercial stocks. Using fishery-independent data collected under the framework of the MEDITS trawl surveys carried out over the last 20 years, we study the demersal fish diversity pattern in the Mediterranean at a large spatial and temporal scale to determine whether it is being affected by the general fishing overexploitation of the demersal resources. The detected diversity trends are compared with the spatio-temporal variation in bottom trawl fishing effort in the Mediterranean. Our results show a...

Trawling-induced resuspension and dispersal of muddy sediments and dissolved elements in the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Le Corre, Gildas; Grenz, C; Conan, P; Pujo Pay, M; Buscail, R; Bodiot, O.
A dedicated trawling experiment was performed at three sites on the Gulf of Lion continental shelf, with the aim of assessing the resuspension of particulate and dissolved matter triggered by different types of trawls on muddy sediments. The different configurations were: (i) bottom trawl, with bobbin for ground rope (Rockhopper): (ii) bottom trawl, without bobbin (Medits); and (iii) pelagic trawl, towed at 1 and 10m above the seabed. The plumes of resuspended sediment were measured using the acoustic backscattered intensity, from a towed ADCP. Concomitant profiles of particle size-distribution, light transmission and water samples were collected, outside and inside the plumes. The analysis of the data enabled derivation of the major physical and...

Траловый промысел и его влияние на донные биоценозы Черного моря IBSS Repository
Болтачев, А. Р..
